Above 3,000 meters, equipment failure is more than an inconvenience — it can end your trip. Our guides have tested gear across Patagonia, the Swiss Alps, and the Southern Alps to compile the definitive equipment list.
Footwear: The Foundation
Stiff-soled, ankle-supportive boots with Vibram outsoles and Gore-Tex membranes are mandatory. Pair with merino wool socks to prevent friction blisters during multi-day expeditions.
Layering System
Follow the three-layer principle: a breathable merino base layer, a high-loft fleece or down mid-layer, and a 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro hardshell outer layer that stops wind and torrential alpine rain.
